A bit about the garden....
The historic Sunken Garden at Moor Hall has a surprisingly long and unusual history.
The site is believed to date back to the Tudor period, when Moor Hall was associated with Bishop John Vesey, who rebuilt the hall in the 1520s after receiving land from Henry VIII. The area that is now the Sunken Garden was originally thought to have been either a bear pit or a cock pit used for blood sports popular in Tudor England.
During the late 19th century, tastes changed and the pit was transformed into a fashionable Victorian-style “sunken garden.” At the time, landscaped gardens with stone grottos, fountains, terraces and ornamental pathways were very popular features on country estates.
In the 1990s, the garden received protected status when it was officially listed as a historic feature to help preserve it.
Today, the Sunken Garden is one of the signature attractions of our grounds. It sits below the main lawns and connects into the surrounding woodland walks.
