Moor Hall Hotel is Awarded Silver in Nationwide Sustainability Scheme!
Moor Hall Hotel & Spa is a family owned hotel that is committed to reducing our impact on the environment. In 2023, we signed up to the REST (Responsible, Ethical & Sustainable) scheme, an internationally recognized independent body, run by Quality in Tourism and we are thrilled to learn that we have been accredited with the Silver award.
The Green Team at Moor Hall meet regularly to discuss improving our green practices and implementing more. In 2023 we implemented a number of improvements across procurement, communication, employment, accessibility and inclusivity, energy, waste management and recycling and wildlife and ecology .
Mark Medley, General Manager of Moor Hall Hotel & Spa commented: “We wanted to quantify our commitment to social and ethical responsibility and demonstrate that commitment to our customers. The scheme not only measures the environment sustainability of our business, but our commitment to our staff, customers, our Corporate Social Responsibility practices, HR policies and supplier relationships.”
Key highlights for Moor Hall’s sustainability improvements in 2023 include:
- Raising over £4,000 for a local charity, Square Peg Activities. The team also dedicated their time to paint communal areas of the centre based in Sutton Coldfield.
- Recognising the importance of water conservation, we prioritised the refurbishment of our pool to address a long standing leak. The area had to close for 6 weeks during the refurbishment but already energy, water and chemical consumption is down considerably.
- Introducing quick-dry robes and towels in The Spa which not only enhance the comfort for our guests, but also significantly reduce the energy consumption during laundry.
- In bedrooms, single use toiletries have been phased out and we now have canned water, which is lighter to transport and the recycling uses less fuel.
- We planted mature trees in our woodlands to help offset carbon dioxide emissions.
- In the kitchen, the main success has been reducing food waste. Food waste is split from the main waste to help reduce the weight of waste and reduce the amount of general rubbish going to landfill. We have also changed our restaurant focus from the carvery restaurant which was open every evening to the brasserie. This has helped reduce food waste as the carvery concept creates a lot of wastage.
- 6 new Electric Car Vehicle charging points were added enabling guests and staff to charge their electric cars onsite.
- 95% of our lighting has been changed to energy saving LED bulbs and we have replaced the TVs in the bedrooms to low energy LED.
Plans for 2024 include working more with local schools and colleges to promote the benefits of working in hospitality; championing our local suppliers, small businesses and local attractions; implementing new rewards and benefits for our team; team training on accessibility and inclusivity; adding more solar panels and looking at ways to heat the pool more effectively; looking at the feasibility of a bore hole, to name a few.
